Frontier's personal item allowance is 14 x 18 x 8 inches, and it must fit under the seat in front of you. Carry-on bags cost extra, often $40 to $70+ each way depending on route and when you buy. Skip the carry-on both directions on ten round trips and you've saved enough to buy the pass again.
The bag itself
You want a soft-sided backpack marketed at or near those dimensions, with a squarish shape that uses the full allowance. Soft matters: a half-empty duffel squishes into compliance in a way a hard shell never will. Plenty of "underseat" bags in the 20 to 25 liter range are built precisely for this game.
A real 5 day packing list
- 3 shirts (wear the 4th), 1 pair of pants (wear them), shorts or a dress depending on destination
- 4 sets of socks and underwear, rolled tight
- Toiletries in a quart bag, TSA sized, nothing you can't buy at a CVS if forgotten
- Phone, charger, one power bank, headphones
- A packable tote that folds to nothing, for beach days and the trip home when souvenirs happened
- Wear your bulkiest shoes and jacket on the plane. The plane outfit is part of the luggage.
When to just pay for the bag
Winter trips with bulky gear, trips with kids, special occasions with real clothes: sometimes the bag fee is worth it. Two rules if so. Buy bags at booking, when prices are lowest, not at the airport, where they're highest. And consider whether the Frontier credit card's two free checked bags changes your math if you fly often; we cover that later in the series.
