Two pricing rules dominate everything: bags cost least when bought at booking and most at the gate, where the price can roughly double. And prices drift upward as departure approaches, so a decision delayed is money donated.
The decision tree
- Trip under 5 days? Personal item, easy call. The packing post has the full system: roll everything, wear the bulk, sink laundry past day five.
- Longer trip or real gear? A checked bag usually beats a carry-on at similar prices. You skip the overhead bin scramble entirely, and with nothing to stow, boarding order stops mattering at all.

The mistakes that fund the airline
- Gate-side surprises: an oversized personal item measured at the gate costs the maximum, and a borderline bag is a carry-on in the gate agent's eyes. Buy it at booking or shrink it.
- Buying round trip bags out of habit: bags price per direction. Plenty of trips need a bag one way (gifts out, souvenirs back... pick one) and free the other.
- Ignoring the bundle math on multi-bag trips: if you're buying a carry-on plus a seat anyway, price the bundle before paying a la carte.
